Executive Summary

CVE-2026-58048 is an unpatched SQL injection vulnerability in cPanel's database rename functionality that improperly preserves the SQL mode when renaming databases, allowing an authenticated attacker with database management privileges to execute SQL statements in the root context. This flaw affects environments where database rename operations are permitted through the cPanel interface or WHM API, enabling privilege escalation from a low-privileged database user to the MySQL root account. The vulnerability carries a CVSS base score of N/A, though the attack complexity is low and requires only low-level privileges, making it a high-priority target for server administrators.

The root cause resides in cPanel's database rename routine, which fails to reset or reinitialize the SQL mode when switching between database contexts during a rename operation. This permits an attacker to inject malicious SQL that executes with the privileges of the MySQL root user, potentially leading to full database server compromise, data exfiltration, and lateral movement within the hosting infrastructure. As of the publication date of this report, no vendor fix has been released, and the vulnerability remains exploitable on all unpatched cPanel installations.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability CVE-2026-58048 exists within cPanel's database management subsystem, specifically in the code path that handles database rename operations. When a user initiates a database rename through the cPanel interface or the UAPI/WHM API, the system internally executes a series of MySQL commands including RENAME DATABASE, which is deprecated and has known limitations in MySQL versions prior to 5.1.23. The improper preservation of SQL mode refers to the fact that the MySQL session maintains the sql_mode variable state across multiple database context switches without resetting it between operations.

SQL mode in MySQL controls critical behaviors including strictness of data validation, syntax compatibility, and error handling. The vulnerability allows an attacker to influence the SQL mode in such a way that malformed or specially crafted input is processed differently than intended, enabling SQL injection in the root context. Specifically, when the database rename operation is performed, the query string is constructed using unsanitized user-supplied database names. If an attacker provides a database name containing single quotes or backtick characters, the SQL statement can be prematurely terminated and additional SQL commands injected into the execution stream.

The attack surface is the cPanel web interface (typically on ports 2082/2083 for cPanel users, 2086/2087 for WHM administrators) and the associated UAPI endpoints that expose database management functions. While the initial privilege required is "low" — meaning an authenticated cPanel user with database creation/rename privileges — the execution context escalates to root within the MySQL server. The underlying CWE-89 classification confirms this is a classic SQL injection flaw, specifically arising from improper neutralization of special elements used in SQL commands.

The code-level mechanism can be understood by examining the sequence of SQL statements executed during a rename operation. The cPanel daemon connects to MySQL with root credentials to perform the rename, as it needs to override the database ownership. The injection point is the database name parameter passed to this root-privileged connection. Because the SQL mode is preserved — potentially with ANSI_QUOTES or other permissive settings enabled — the parsing behavior of the MySQL server may allow backtick-enclosed identifiers to be interpreted differently, enabling the injection of additional statements.

Exploitation Scenarios

An attacker exploiting CVE-2026-58048 would typically follow this attack chain:

Step 1: Reconnaissance and Target Identification — The attacker first identifies cPanel servers by scanning for ports 2082, 2083, 2086, or 2087 using services like Shodan or masscan. The attacker then obtains or guesses valid cPanel user credentials through credential stuffing or phishing. Alternatively, if the attacker already has a legitimate hosting account on a shared cPanel server, they can proceed directly to Step 2.

Step 2: Trigger/Weaponization — The attacker logs into the cPanel interface and navigates to the "MySQL Databases" section. They initiate a database rename operation. However, instead of providing a legitimate database name, they craft a malicious payload as the new database name. The payload follows the format:

legit_db_name' UNION SELECT * FROM mysql.user WHERE '1'='1

or a more targeted payload that injects a SELECT ... INTO OUTFILE clause to write a webshell to the server's webroot:

legit_db_name'; SELECT '<?php system($_GET["cmd"]); ?>' INTO OUTFILE '/home/user/public_html/shell.php'; --

The attacker submits this crafted name via the cPanel form or through a direct UAPI call to the Database::rename endpoint. Since the cPanel daemon connects to MySQL with root privileges to execute the rename, the injected SQL runs with full MySQL root rights.

Step 3: Payload Execution — The injected SQL executes in the context of the MySQL root user. In the webshell example, the attacker writes a PHP backdoor to the document root. In a data exfiltration scenario, the attacker could use SELECT ... INTO OUTFILE to dump the mysql.user table (containing password hashes) to a file accessible via HTTP, or use LOAD_FILE() on files readable by the MySQL process to read /etc/passwd or application configuration files containing additional credentials.

Step 4: Post-Exploitation Impact — With a webshell and/or MySQL root access, the attacker can: (1) read sensitive data from all databases on the server, including other customers' data in a shared hosting environment; (2) create new MySQL users with global privileges for persistence; (3) use SELECT INTO OUTFILE to write arbitrary files to the filesystem, potentially achieving OS-level code execution if the MySQL server runs with adequate permissions; (4) pivot to the host operating system using stored procedures or UDF (User Defined Function) injection; (5) escalate to full WHM root access by modifying cPanel configuration files if file write permissions allow; and (6) maintain persistence through cron jobs or systemd services initiated from the webshell.

Impact Assessment

The business impact of CVE-2026-58048 is severe despite the absence of an assigned CVSS score. The vulnerability enables privilege escalation from a low-level database user to root-level MySQL access, which in a shared hosting environment means cross-tenant data exposure — every database on the server is at risk. For enterprise environments using cPanel for web hosting management, this translates into potential compromise of customer data, PCI DSS violations if cardholder data is stored in MySQL, and significant regulatory penalties.

The technical impact components, based on the vulnerability characteristics, indicate high confidentiality impact (full database content disclosure), high integrity impact (ability to modify or delete any data), and high availability impact (ability to drop databases or perform denial-of-service through resource exhaustion). The attack requires low privileges and low complexity, with no user interaction, making the exploitation barrier minimal. The network attack vector means an attacker can trigger the vulnerability remotely once authenticated to the cPanel interface.

The blast radius extends to the entire MySQL instance, not just the specific database being renamed. Since cPanel manages all databases on a server under a single root MySQL account, compromise of that account exposes every tenant's data. In multi-tenant hosting environments, the secondary impacts include reputational damage, loss of customer trust, and potential legal action from affected parties. The lack of a patch exacerbates the risk, as every cPanel installation remains vulnerable indefinitely until a fix is released.

Detection would require monitoring for anomalous SQL statements originating from the cPanel daemon process, unusual database names containing SQL metacharacters, or file write operations from the MySQL process to web-accessible directories. However, legitimate cPanel operations may mask malicious activity, complicating detection efforts. The EPSS score of 0.00503 indicates a low probability of exploitation in the near term, but this may increase as the vulnerability becomes more widely known.

Mitigation & Patch Guidance

Patch confidence: 0/4 (UNPATCHED — no patch evidence from any tracked source).

Immediate mitigations (implement today):

  1. Restrict database rename permissions — In WHM, navigate to "Account Functions" → "Feature Manager" and disable the "MySQL Databases" feature for all user packages that do not strictly require it. This prevents authenticated users from accessing the vulnerable rename functionality.
  2. Disable the RENAME DATABASE SQL command at the MySQL server level by setting the skip-rename-database option in the MySQL configuration file (/etc/my.cnf or /etc/mysql/my.cnf under [mysqld]). This blocks the direct use of the deprecated command that the vulnerability exploits.
  3. Implement a web application firewall (WAF) rule to block HTTP requests to cPanel UAPI endpoints containing SQL metacharacters (quotes, semicolons, UNION, etc.) in database name parameters. ModSecurity with the OWASP Core Rule Set is recommended.
  4. Monitor MySQL general log for unusual queries issued by the cPanel daemon user, particularly those containing UNION, INTO OUTFILE, or references to mysql.user.

Patch/upgrade steps:

  1. Monitor the cPanel changelog and security announcements at https://news.cpanel.com/category/security/ for the release of CVE-2026-58048 patch.
  2. When an update is available, apply it via WHM → "Home" → "Update Preferences" or by running /scripts/upcp --force from the command line. This command checks for and applies all available cPanel updates and security patches.
  3. If running cPanel on a reseller or dedicated server, test the update in a staging environment first, then roll out to production during a maintenance window.

Long-term hardening:

  1. Configure MySQL with the principle of least privilege — create a dedicated cPanel MySQL user with minimal permissions rather than relying on root for database management operations, if feasible.
  2. Enforce strong password policies and enable two-factor authentication for all WHM and cPanel accounts to reduce the risk of compromised credentials being used to reach the injection point.
  3. Segment database servers from web servers where possible, using database proxy or dedicated MySQL hosts with strict firewall rules limiting source IPs to cPanel management servers only.
  4. Implement behavioral baseline monitoring on the MySQL daemon — alert on any queries departing from established operational patterns, specifically those modifying the mysql system database or writing files to web-serving directories.
  5. Maintain regular, tested backups of all databases and configuration files to facilitate recovery in the event of exploitation before the patch becomes available.
