CVE-2026-75048
Executive Summary
CVE-2026-75048 is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in JetBrains YouTrack, a widely deployed issue tracking and project management platform. Affected versions are those released before build 2026.2.18068, in which attacker-supplied content in the language label of a Markdown fenced code block is not safely neutralized, allowing malicious script to be stored on the server and executed in the browsers of other users who view the crafted item. A successful attack rated 8.2 (High) enables theft of confidential issue data and session manipulation across the YouTrack domain, making all self-hosted and managed YouTrack deployments that permit Markdown input potentially vulnerable.

Technical Analysis
The vulnerability belongs to the CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation) class, specifically the stored/persistent XSS sub-type. JetBrains YouTrack renders user-authored issue descriptions, comments, and related content using Markdown. Standard Markdown supports fenced code blocks, which begin with a line of three backtick characters optionally followed by a language label that is used by the syntax highlighter to classify the code (e.g., ```python).
In affected versions prior to 2026.2.18068, the language label portion of the fenced code block is incorporated into the final rendered HTML without adequate encoding or sanitization. Because the content is processed and stored server-side before being re-rendered to subsequent viewers, the injection point is persistent rather than reflected. An attacker who can create or modify any content rendered with Markdown — issue descriptions, comments, or other collaborative fields — can terminate the code-fence context and introduce active HTML elements or JavaScript event handlers that execute in the full origin context of the YouTrack application when a victim opens the affected page.
The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:L/A:N) indicates the vulnerable input surface is reachable over the network without attacker authentication in at least one supported configuration, and that the injection executes in the browser session of a victim who must be enticed into viewing the stored content. The Scope (S:C) component reflects that the impact extends beyond the vulnerable rendering component into the victim's browser and whatever company data the victim can access. Confidentiality impact is High (session-level read access to issues, attachments metadata, project data), while integrity impact is Low and availability impact is None.
At the time of writing, no vendor advisory, commit reference, or patch bundle has been confirmed by the tracked patch sources, and no public proof-of-concept has been released. The only concrete technical anchor is the NVD description, which names the vulnerable component ("fenced code-block language label") and the fixed build (2026.2.18068). Insufficient technical detail is available to identify the exact rendering function, file path, or API endpoint involved.
Exploitation Scenarios
No public PoC is available; the attack chain below is inferred from the vulnerability class (stored XSS) and the NVD description. It is presented at the level of the generic XSS mechanism without fabricating implementation details.
Reconnaissance / target identification. An attacker fingerprints a YouTrack instance via HTTP response headers, the login page title, or the product's exposed static assets. Version identification can be attempted through the public-facing UI or build metadata; targets running builds earlier than 2026.2.18068 are potentially affected. Shodan-style enumeration using application title/product filters can yield a broad target list.
Triggering the flaw. The attacker submits a payload through any input surface that accepts Markdown and is subsequently rendered to other users — for example, creating an issue or appending a comment. The payload abuses the fenced code-block syntax: instead of a benign language label (e.g.,
```text), the attacker supplies a label that breaks out of the code-fence context and introduces a script-bearing HTML construct. Because the stored content is later rendered without proper neutralization, the malicious markup is persisted in the application's data store.Payload execution. When a victim (developer, project manager, or administrator) opens the issue or comment containing the crafted fenced block, the browser parses the injected HTML/JavaScript in the origin of the YouTrack application. Execution occurs automatically on page load or upon a simple UI interaction such as a mouse-over, satisfying the User Interaction (UI:R) requirement of the CVSS vector.
Post-exploitation impact. The injected script runs with the victim's identity and session. It can issue same-origin requests to YouTrack's internal APIs to read private issue text, extract project membership and comment history, search for credentials or tokens that teams commonly paste into issues, and perform actions on the victim's behalf (e.g., modifying issue state, exfiltrating data to an external attacker-controlled host). If the victim is an administrator, the attack may also touch user-management and configuration surfaces, effectively enabling account takeover of the viewing user.
Impact Assessment
The vulnerability is rated 8.2 (High) under CVSS 3.1. Three sub-scores drive the severity:
- Confidentiality (High): The stored script runs in the context of the browsing user's full session, giving the attacker read access to issue content, project metadata, attachments, and any sensitive strings (API keys, login URLs, internal hostnames) stored in comments. For development teams, issue trackers routinely contain architecture details and release plans; a compromise can therefore leak pre-release information.
- Integrity (Low): The attacker can modify data inside the victim's session, such as altering issue field values or posting comments as the victim, but cannot directly rewrite application binaries or configuration.
- Scope (Changed): The vulnerable component (Markdown renderer) is in the application tier, while the impact materializes in the victim's browser and downstream corporate data, meaning a pivot is implicit in the scoring.
Blast radius considerations: YouTrack is commonly used by software engineering and DevOps teams, frequently with integrations to source control, CI/CD, and chat platforms. Stored XSS in this context is not limited to defacement; it can enable session hijacking, lateral movement through harvested credentials, and — if admins view the payload — configuration tampering. No evidence of in-the-wild exploitation or inclusion in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog exists as of this report, but stored XSS in a collaboration tool typically attracts attackers once a PoC circulates because of the low interaction barrier (viewing a page) for victims.
Detection Guidance
The following detections hunt for the characteristic combination of a Markdown fenced code-block marker and active script content in HTTP requests to YouTrack, or for the corresponding execution indicators in web server and proxy logs. They do not rely on any specific endpoint path, since none is exposed in the NVD description.
Mitigation & Patch Guidance
Patch confidence is 0/4 — no patch evidence has been confirmed from any tracked source. The NVD description references build 2026.2.18068 as the boundary, but this has not been corroborated by a JetBrains security bulletin in the monitored channels, so organizations should verify directly with the vendor before treating remediation as complete.
Immediate mitigations:
- Deploy a WAF virtual patch based on the detection patterns above (fenced code-block marker co-occurring with
<script,javascript:, or event-handler attributes in POST bodies). - If anonymous issue reporting is enabled, disable it until the environment is upgraded; restricting the pool of users who can inject stored Markdown reduces exposure.
- Segment access to YouTrack so that only authorized networks can reach the UI; short-term this contains the blast radius if the instance is compromised.
- Audit existing issues/comments for fenced code blocks whose language label contains HTML or script markers, and remove or neutralize them.
- Deploy a WAF virtual patch based on the detection patterns above (fenced code-block marker co-occurring with
Patch/upgrade steps:
- Plan an upgrade to YouTrack 2026.2.18068 or later as referenced in the NVD description. Before upgrading, confirm the availability and integrity of the release via JetBrains' official distribution channels, since no formal advisory has been confirmed at the time of writing.
- Apply the upgrade in a staging environment first, verifying that the Markdown rendering workflow behaves normally.
Long-term hardening:
- Enforce a strict Content-Security-Policy on the YouTrack application domain to blunt the impact of any future XSS (e.g.,
script-src 'self'with nonce-based allowances). - Configure runtime protections where available (CSP reporting, browser XSS auditor alternatives) and centralize web server/proxy logs into the SIEM so the detections above fire promptly.
- Subscribe to JetBrains security advisories and monitor CISA KEV; the CVE is not currently listed, but status should be rechecked as information becomes available.
- Train development and operations staff that issue trackers are prime targets for credential harvesting, and mandate the use of a dedicated secrets manager rather than pasting tokens into issues.
- Enforce a strict Content-Security-Policy on the YouTrack application domain to blunt the impact of any future XSS (e.g.,
