CVE-2026-81529
Executive Summary
CVE-2026-81529 is an improper neutralization of delimiters (CWE-88) in the connection-URL construction logic of the MongoDB C# Driver. When an application passes untrusted text into the driver's connection-URL builder and round-trips that builder output back into a client configuration, the untrusted text is serialized without neutralizing URL/option delimiters and is subsequently re-parsed as authoritative connection options. This allows a low-privileged application user to inject or suppress security-relevant connection settings, with a published CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.1 (High).

Technical Analysis
The vulnerability class here is connection-option injection via improper delimiter neutralization (CWE-88, "Improper Neutralization of Argument Delimiters in a Command"). The MongoDB C# Driver exposes a connection-URL builder that assembles a MongoDB connection string from constituent parts. A MongoDB connection string uses a defined syntax in which option/value pairs are separated by delimiters (for example & between options and = between an option name and its value, within the standard MongoDB URI connection-string grammar). If an application feeds untrusted text into that builder and the resulting string is then consumed by a client configuration, the trust boundary is crossed: data that originated as untrusted input is promoted to the status of authoritative configuration.
Per the NVD description, the defect is that the untrusted text "is serialized without neutralizing the URL/option delimiters and is then re-parsed as authoritative connection options." In practice this means that if an attacker-controlled value contains delimiter characters meaningful to the MongoDB connection-string grammar, those characters are not escaped or rejected during serialization. On the round-trip re-parse, the driver interprets the injected delimiters as structural syntax rather than as literal data. The result is that the attacker's text can "introduce or suppress security-relevant connection settings" — i.e., the attacker can cause additional connection options to appear in the effective configuration, or cause legitimate options already present to be dropped or overridden.
The attack surface is therefore not the MongoDB server itself but the application layer that constructs a connection string from untrusted input and then round-trips it into a client configuration. This is a classic "data becomes code" boundary violation: delimiters are control characters in the connection-string language, and failing to neutralize them allows an attacker to restructure the parsed configuration.
Several properties of the CVSS vector characterize the practical difficulty and reach:
- AV:N (Network) — the vulnerable application is reachable over a network.
- AC:H (High) — exploitation is conditional; the application must both accept untrusted text into the builder and round-trip the builder back into client configuration, which is not universal usage.
- PR:L (Low) — an attacker needs only low privileges in the application, consistent with "a low-privileged user of such an application."
- UI:N (None) — no user interaction is required.
- S:C (Changed) — the impact scope changes, meaning the exploited component can affect resources beyond its own security authority (the connection configuration governs how the client authenticates/connects).
- C:H (High confidentiality impact) — injected connection settings can plausibly redirect or weaken authentication/transport constraints, exposing data.
- I:L (Low integrity impact) — connection settings can be altered but the description does not support broad data-integrity compromise.
- A:N (No availability impact).
The NVD description does not specify which concrete connection options are most security-relevant, nor does it name any function, class, parameter, or file path. No code-level identifiers are provided, and none should be inferred. The specific options an attacker would target (for example those affecting authentication or transport security) are those available in the MongoDB connection-string grammar, but the description does not enumerate them and this report will not fabricate them.
Exploitation Scenarios
Because no public proof-of-concept, exploit code, or Nuclei template exists for this CVE, the following chain is inferred from the vulnerability class (CWE-88) and the NVD description only. No specific function names, parameters, or endpoints are invented.
Reconnaissance / target identification. The attacker identifies an application that (a) uses the MongoDB C# Driver, (b) accepts attacker-influenced input, and (c) passes that input into the driver's connection-URL builder, subsequently round-tripping the builder result into a client configuration. This is an application-design precondition, not a network-discoverable banner. The attacker may infer this from application behavior, documentation, source availability (if the application is open source), or by probing inputs that surface in connection behavior.
Triggering the flaw class. The attacker supplies text containing characters that are meaningful as delimiters in the MongoDB connection-string grammar. Because the builder serializes this text without neutralizing the delimiters, the delimiters survive serialization. When the builder output is re-parsed as authoritative configuration, the driver treats the injected characters as structural syntax rather than literal data — the core CWE-88 failure.
Payload / execution at the vulnerability-class level. The attacker crafts the untrusted text so that, upon re-parse, it either introduces a new connection option or suppresses/overrides an existing one. The description states this can "introduce or suppress security-relevant connection settings." A low-privileged application user is sufficient (PR:L). No user interaction is required (UI:N). The precise option names and the exact delimiter characters are not specified in the supplied data and are therefore not asserted here.
Post-exploitation impact. The altered effective configuration governs how the C# Driver's client connects and authenticates. With S:C (scope changed) and C:H (High confidentiality impact), the realistic consequence is that an attacker can weaken or redirect the connection's security posture, leading to exposure of data that the connection accesses. Integrity impact is Low and availability impact is None, consistent with a settings-manipulation attack rather than destructive or wide-ranging tampering.
Impact Assessment
Business impact centers on unauthorized alteration of database connection security posture. An application that trusts a round-tripped connection string as authoritative could be induced to connect under weakened or redirected settings, exposing sensitive data handled by that connection. The "Changed" scope (S:C) indicates impact can extend beyond the vulnerable component's own authority, and the High confidentiality subscore (C:H) reflects potential data exposure. Integrity impact is Low (I:L) and availability impact is None (A:N), so the primary risk is confidentiality of data reachable via the affected connection, not destruction or denial of service.
Blast radius is defined by which applications both accept untrusted input into the connection-URL builder and round-trip the builder back into client configuration. The description does not identify affected versions, so the full set of impacted releases of the MongoDB C# Driver cannot be enumerated from the available data. The EPSS score is 0.00278 (18.2nd percentile), indicating low predicted near-term exploitation likelihood, and the vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV. Attack complexity is High (AC:H), further constraining mass exploitation.

Mitigation & Patch Guidance
Patch confidence: 0/4 — UNPATCHED. No vendor fix, no workaround, and no fix version is available from any tracked source.
- Immediate mitigations:
- Treat all connection-URL inputs as untrusted code-adjacent data. Do not pass untrusted text into the connection-URL builder if avoidable.
- Do not round-trip builder output back into client configuration when any component of the builder input is attacker-influenced. Reconstruct configuration programmatically from trusted, validated values rather than re-parsing serialized strings.
- Strictly allowlist and validate any user-supplied connection parameters (names and values) before they reach the builder.
- Reject or strip delimiter characters that are structural to the MongoDB connection-string grammar from any user-influenced field, rather than relying on the driver to neutralize them.
- Restrict low-privileged users from any application path that influences connection configuration.
- Patch / upgrade steps:
- No patched version is identified in the available data. Monitor the MongoDB C# Driver release channels and advisories for a fix, and upgrade as soon as one is published from the vendor.
- Because Patch Confidence is 0/4, do not claim any version resolves this issue until vendor confirmation is available.
- Long-term hardening:
- Adopt a design rule that configuration serialization output is never re-parsed as authoritative input.
- Add application-layer unit tests that assert delimiter neutralization when connection URLs are constructed from untrusted input.
- Instrument logging (as in the detection rules above) to flag delimiter-bearing values entering connection-builder paths.
