Executive Summary

CVE-2026-82827 is a critical (CVSS 9.8) hard-coded cryptographic key vulnerability in the Hitachi Coding Software Suite (versions through 3.3.0). The product ships with a static JWT signing secret, allowing an unauthenticated, remote attacker to forge valid Bearer tokens and invoke administrative functions. Full compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability is possible with no user interaction and low attack complexity.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability class is CWE-321: Use of Hard-coded Cryptographic Key. Per the NVD description, the Hitachi Coding Software Suite "contains a vulnerability related to Use of Hard-coded Cryptographic Key. The Hardcoding of JWT signing secret key allows an attacker to generate unauthorized Bearer tokens and exploit administrative functions."

Mechanism: JSON Web Tokens (JWTs) used for session/authorization in the product are signed with a secret embedded in the software rather than generated per-installation and stored securely. Because the signing key is static and discoverable (e.g., through static analysis of distributed binaries or client-side artifacts), an attacker who recovers the key can mint arbitrary tokens. A forged token carrying administrative claims will pass signature verification by the application's token validation logic, since the application trusts any token signed with the known key. This is a trust-boundary failure in the authentication/authorization layer: the system's proof of identity (the HMAC/signature over the token) is derived from a secret the attacker can also possess.

Attack surface: The token issuance/consumption interface. Any network-reachable endpoint that accepts Bearer tokens and enforces authorization based on token claims is in scope. With AV:N (network) and PR:N (no privileges required), a remote, unauthenticated attacker is in scope.

Important caveat: The NVD description does not disclose the exact key value, token format parameters (e.g., specific claim names), endpoint paths, or the signing algorithm. No public PoC, no Nuclei template, and no exploit code is available. The attack chain below is therefore described at the vulnerability-class level. No function names, endpoints, or parameters beyond those in the description are asserted.

Exploitation Scenarios

  1. Reconnaissance / Target Identification The attacker identifies an internet-exposed Hitachi Coding Software Suite instance (version <= 3.3.0) via service fingerprinting (banner, page title, or product-specific HTTP responses). Because exploitation is unauthenticated and requires no user interaction, this is a low-cost, high-yield target for broad scanning.

  2. Triggering the Flaw Class The attacker recovers the hard-coded JWT signing secret. Typical avenues for hard-coded key discovery include: static analysis of distributed software artifacts (binaries, container images, configuration bundles), extraction from client-side code distributed with the product, or reuse of a known/published default. No specific extraction technique is asserted here because no public technical detail is available. Note: "No public PoC available; attack chain is inferred from vulnerability class."

  3. Payload / Execution Using the recovered secret, the attacker constructs a JWT signed with the valid algorithm and containing administrative claims, then presents it as a Bearer token in the Authorization header to the application. The application validates the signature against the same hard-coded secret, accepts the token, and grants the privileges conveyed by the claims. This is a token-forgery attack against the JWT validation trust boundary — no credential brute-force or user interaction is needed.

  4. Post-Exploitation Impact Successful token forgery yields access to administrative functionality as specified by the NVD description. Given the CVSS subscores (C:H/I:H/A:H), an attacker can read sensitive data, modify configuration or records, and disrupt service availability (e.g., via administrative actions). Persistence is trivial while the static key remains in use: the attacker can re-mint tokens at will.

Impact Assessment

Business impact: Administrative compromise of the Coding Software Suite could expose source code, credentials, and internal project data (C:H), permit unauthorized modification of code/configuration (I:H), and enable denial of service through administrative actions (A:H). Because the flaw is unauthenticated (PR:N) and remotely reachable (AV:N), blast radius is any network-exposed instance of version <= 3.3.0. There is no known exploit-in-the-wild and no CISA KEV listing at time of writing.

CVSS subscores: AV:N / AC:L / PR:N / UI:N / S:U / C:H / I:H / A:H → 9.8 Critical.

Detection Guidance

Because the attacker forges tokens using a legitimate signing secret, signature-validity checks in the application will not flag the traffic. Detection must rely on behavioral and anomaly signals: administrative actions from new/unknown source IPs, unusual token issuance or usage patterns (same token replayed across sessions/IPs, admin claims on tokens from non-admin origins), and anomalous administrative API activity (bulk data access, configuration changes). Network-level detection is difficult since the tokens are cryptographically valid; log-based and identity-based correlation is the primary control.

Mitigation & Patch Guidance

Patch confidence: 0/4 (UNPATCHED — no patch evidence from any tracked source). No vendor fix, no workaround, and no affected-version listing beyond "through 3.3.0" has been published. Treat all instances of version <= 3.3.0 as vulnerable until Hitachi issues a fix.

  1. Immediate mitigations
  • Remove internet exposure: restrict access to management endpoints via VPN or IP allowlisting; do not expose the suite's admin interface directly.
  • If the platform supports it, rotate the JWT signing secret to a unique per-deployment value stored in a secrets manager, and invalidate all previously issued tokens. Note: since the key is hard-coded, this may require vendor guidance or configuration modification; validate before relying on it.
  • Enforce short token lifetimes and strict audience/issuer/claim validation if configurable.
  • Place the service behind an identity-aware proxy to add an authentication layer independent of the application's JWT validation.
  1. Patch/upgrade steps
  • Monitor Hitachi's official advisory and product channels for a fixed release. No patch reference exists at this time.
  • When a patch is available, upgrade promptly, redeploy with a newly generated signing key, and invalidate all outstanding tokens.
  1. Long-term hardening
  • Eliminate hard-coded secrets across the SDLC: prefer per-installation key generation, HSM/KMS-backed signing, and secret rotation.
  • Add static-analysis (SAST) and secrets-scanning controls to detect embedded credentials in builds and artifacts.
  • Enforce least privilege for administrative functions and continuous audit logging of admin actions.
