CVE-2026-84925
Executive Summary
CVE-2026-84925 is a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Avada | Website Builder For WordPress & WooCommerce theme affecting all versions up to and including 7.16.1. The flaw resides in the handling of the lang parameter, which is passed through Fusion_Multilingual::set_active_language() and concatenated into a URL by Fusion_Settings::get_setting_link() without encoding or escaping before being echoed into a double-quoted href attribute in the post editor metabox. Unauthenticated attackers can craft a URL that, when a victim (typically an authenticated editor or administrator) is tricked into clicking it, executes arbitrary JavaScript in the context of the vulnerable WordPress site — enabling session theft, privileged action forgery, and site compromise via an admin's browser.

Technical Analysis
The vulnerability is a classic reflected cross-site scripting condition (CWE-79) arising from missing input sanitization and missing output escaping. The attack surface is the theme's multilingual handling path, reachable through the lang request parameter.
The NVD description identifies the specific code path:
- User-controlled input reaches
Fusion_Multilingual::set_active_language(), which stores or propagates the supplied language value. Fusion_Settings::get_setting_link()then concatenates that value into a URL. Critically, the value is inserted withouturlencode(),esc_url(), oresc_attr().- The resulting URL is echoed raw into a double-quoted
hrefattribute within the post editor metabox.
Two properties make this exploitable:
- No output encoding. Because the value is neither URL-encoded nor HTML-attribute-escaped, an attacker who supplies a payload containing a double quote can break out of the
href="..."attribute and inject additional HTML/JavaScript, such as anonmouseoverhandler or a new<script>/<img onerror=...>element. - No input sanitization.
set_active_language()does not reject or normalize malicious values, so the raw attacker string flows downstream intact.
Because the sink is rendered in the post editor metabox, the executed script runs in the browser of a user viewing the editor — an authenticated user with at least editor privileges. The lang parameter is reachable without authentication (the request that stores/propagates it is unauthenticated), but successful script execution requires victim interaction: the CVSS vector carries PR:N (no privileges required to deliver) and UI:R (user interaction required to trigger). The scope change (S:C) reflects that the malicious script executes in the origin/security context of the victim site, crossing a trust boundary relative to the vulnerable component.
The lang parameter is conventionally associated with WordPress multilingual behavior driven by WPLANG/locale cookies and query strings; the exact parameter format is inferred from the CVE description and has not been independently verified here. No public proof-of-concept, exploit code, or Nuclei template was available at the time of writing, so the browser-level payload syntax is described at the vulnerability-class level rather than as a verified working string.
Exploitation Scenarios
No public PoC is available; the attack chain below is inferred from the vulnerability class (reflected XSS via an unencoded parameter echoed into an HTML attribute).
Reconnaissance / target identification. The attacker identifies WordPress installations running the Avada theme at version 7.16.1 or earlier. This is fingerprintable via theme asset paths referenced in page source (
wp-content/themes/Avada,fusion-asset prefixes) using search engines or network scanning.Triggering the flaw. The attacker crafts a URL that supplies a malicious value to the
langparameter. Because the value is not sanitized byFusion_Multilingual::set_active_language(), it is carried into the URL built byFusion_Settings::get_setting_link(). The payload is designed to break out of the double-quotedhrefattribute by including a double-quote character followed by script-bearing markup or an event handler.Delivery and execution. The attacker delivers the crafted URL to a victim via phishing email, chat, or a malicious link. The victim must click the link and reach the post editor metabox where the raw
hrefis rendered (UI:R). Because the value is echoed withoutesc_attr()/esc_url(), the browser parses the injected markup and executes the attacker's JavaScript in the site's origin. The injected active language value is propagated viaFusion_Multilingual::set_active_language(), so the payload survives from the request into the editor render.Post-exploitation impact. Executed in the victim's authenticated context, the script can read page contents and cookies accessible to JavaScript, perform authenticated actions on behalf of the victim (e.g., creating or modifying content, altering theme/plugin settings if the victim has sufficient privileges), perform redirects, or inject persistent content. Since the impacted victim is an editor-level or higher user, this can translate into full site compromise or defacement. Confidentiality and Integrity impacts are rated Low (
C:L/I:L); Availability impact is None (A:N).
Impact Assessment
- Confidentiality (Low): Script execution in a privileged user's browser can expose session tokens, nonces, and page data accessible to that origin.
- Integrity (Low): An attacker operating through a victim's authenticated session can perform state-changing actions within the scope of that victim's privileges.
- Availability (None): The flaw does not directly interrupt service availability.
- Scope (Changed): Exploitation crosses a security boundary — the injected script runs with the trust of the targeted site's origin.
- Blast radius: Any WordPress site running Avada <= 7.16.1, with the multiplex of affected sites potentially large given Avada's commercial popularity. The most at-risk population is authenticated editor/administrator users who interact with the post editor metabox. Because delivery is unauthenticated (
PR:N) and requires only a click (UI:R), exploitation is low-complexity and attractive for watering-hole and targeted phishing campaigns. - CVSS: 6.1 (Medium) —
AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N. EPSS is not yet scored by FIRST.org; no KEV listing; no known exploit code or Nuclei template.

Mitigation & Patch Guidance
Patch confidence: 0/4 (UNPATCHED — no patch evidence from any tracked source). No vendor fix or documented workaround is available as of this report; the guidance below is mitigative and does not constitute a fix.
Immediate mitigations
- Deploy virtual patching at the WAF/reverse proxy layer: reject or sanitize requests where the
langquery parameter contains angle brackets, quotes, javascript:, or event-handler keywords. Rules above (Suricata/Sigma/Wazuh) provide detection; the WAF block pattern should mirror them. - Apply a server-side input filter that strips/HTML-encodes non-language values from
langbefore the request reaches the theme. - Restrict editor-metabox access to trusted, confirmed-authenticated users and reduce non-essential editor/administrator accounts.
- Warn privileged users against clicking unsolicited links that point to
/wp-admin/post-editor URLs, especially those carryinglang=parameters. - Enforce a strict Content-Security-Policy that disallows inline script, which mitigates execution even if the reflected attribute is rendered.
- Deploy virtual patching at the WAF/reverse proxy layer: reject or sanitize requests where the
Patch / upgrade steps
- No fixed version is listed. Monitor the Avada vendor (ThemeForest/Envato) and the WPLANG channel for updates beyond 7.16.1.
- Subscribe to the CVE record at NVD and to vendor release notes; when a patched version ships, upgrade the theme immediately and re-validate the
lang/editor path. - Until a fix ships, consider temporarily disabling the affected multilingual/editor metabox functionality if it is not operationally required.
Long-term hardening
- Adopt output encoding at the point of rendering (e.g.,
esc_attr()/esc_url()/urlencode()for URL and attribute contexts) as a coding standard for theme development. - Enforce a CSP and
X-Content-Type-Options: nosniffwithHttpOnlyandSameSiteon session cookies. - Maintain a WordPress component inventory so theme/plugin versions are continuously tracked against CVEs.
- Integrate server-side WAF virtual patching and monitor for exploit attempts using the detection logic above.
- Adopt output encoding at the point of rendering (e.g.,
