CVE-2026-86803
Executive Summary
CVE-2026-86803 is an arbitrary shortcode execution vulnerability in the Ocean Extra plugin for WordPress, affecting all versions up to and including 2.6.0. The flaw stems from an action that fails to validate an input value before passing it to WordPress's do_shortcode function, allowing unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary registered shortcodes. While rated 6.5 (Medium), successful exploitation enables content injection, information disclosure, and potential privilege escalation depending on which shortcodes are available.

Technical Analysis
Ocean Extra is a companion plugin for the OceanWP theme, widely deployed on WordPress sites. The vulnerability lies in the plugin's handling of an action that accepts a user-supplied value and passes it directly to do_shortcode() without adequate validation or sanitization. WordPress's do_shortcode() function parses a string and replaces any registered shortcode tags with their corresponding output.
The core issue is a missing validation step before the dynamic shortcode execution. Because the action is reachable without authentication (CVSS PR:N), any remote user can supply an arbitrary shortcode payload. The software does not verify that the requesting user is authorized, nor does it restrict which shortcodes may be executed.
This is a classic CWE-94 (Improper Control of Generation of Code) pattern: user-controlled input flows into a code-generation/evaluation sink. The severity is bounded by which shortcodes are registered on the target site — a stock Ocean Extra installation exposes benign shortcodes, but third-party plugins frequently register shortcodes that render sensitive data, output user content, or (in some cases) perform privileged operations. The NVD description does not enumerate the specific action name, parameter, or shortcodes affected, so precise endpoint details cannot be confirmed from the available data.
Attack surface: The vulnerability is network-reachable (AV:N), requires no authentication (PR:N) or user interaction (UI:N), and has low attack complexity (AC:L). Confidentiality and Integrity impacts are both Low (C:L/I:L), with no Availability impact (A:N) — consistent with shortcode output being rendered into a response without corrupting or degrading the host system.
Exploitation Scenarios
No public proof-of-concept is available; the attack chain below is inferred from the vulnerability class (unauthenticated arbitrary shortcode execution) and the NVD description.
Reconnaissance / Target Identification — An attacker identifies WordPress sites running the OceanWP theme by fingerprinting asset paths and page markup. Ocean Extra is typically present wherever OceanWP is active. Mass scanning can enumerate candidate targets via search engines (Shodan dorks above) or direct requests.
Triggering the Flaw — The attacker sends a crafted HTTP request to the plugin action that accepts a shortcode string. Because the value is not validated before reaching
do_shortcode(), the attacker can inject arbitrary shortcode syntax into the request. No authentication or session is required.Payload / Execution — The injected shortcode string is processed by WordPress's shortcode parser. Any shortcode registered on the site — by Ocean Extra itself or by other active plugins/themes — will execute and its output returned or rendered in the response. The attacker iterates shortcode tags (e.g.,
[shortcode_name]and attributes) to probe for useful output. Unlike an injection that grants direct code execution, the impact is confined to whatever the registered shortcodes are capable of producing or doing.Post-Exploitation Impact — Depending on the shortcodes available, an attacker may: extract data exposed by shortcodes (user lists, configuration values), inject/alter rendered content, or invoke shortcodes in third-party plugins that perform privileged actions (e.g., form processing, data export). Because the flaw is unauthenticated and trivially reachable, it is attractive for opportunistic mass exploitation and content-injection campaigns. There is no availability impact and no evidence of remote code execution from this vulnerability alone.
Impact Assessment
- CVSS 3.1: 6.5 (Medium) — AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Confidentiality (Low): Arbitrary shortcode execution may disclose data surfaced by registered shortcodes.
- Integrity (Low): Attackers can influence rendered content and, if privileged shortcodes exist, trigger state-changing operations.
- Availability (None): The vulnerability does not cause denial of service.
- Blast radius: Every WordPress site running Ocean Extra <= 2.6.0 is a candidate target. The plugin is theme-adjacent and commonly deployed, so internet-wide exposure is meaningful. Impact varies per site based on the set of registered shortcodes; sites running plugins with powerful shortcodes face elevated risk (up to privilege escalation or data exfiltration), while minimal sites may only see content injection.
- Exploitability: No authentication, no user interaction, low complexity; EPSS is not yet scored by FIRST.org, and no PoC/exploit code or Nuclei template is currently public.

Mitigation & Patch Guidance
Patch confidence: 2/4 (CLAIMED — a single source via NVD claims a patch; not independently confirmed).
Immediate Mitigations
- If Ocean Extra is not required, deactivate and remove it.
- Deploy a WAF rule that blocks shortcode syntax (
[/]and their URL-encoded forms%5B/%5D) in parameters to plugin action endpoints. - Restrict/deny unauthenticated access to the affected action where feasible.
- Harden the site: disable unused plugins that register powerful shortcodes, reducing the exploit's operational value.
Patch / Upgrade Steps
- Confirm the fixed release with the vendor before upgrading; the specific patched version is not clearly established. Do not assume an upgrade beyond 2.6.0 resolves the issue until the vendor publishes a confirmed advisory.
- If a fix is confirmed available, update Ocean Extra through the WordPress admin or WP-CLI (
wp plugin update ocean-extra), and verify the version afterward. - Stage the update on a test instance first; monitor for regressions in shortcode-heavy layout pages.
Long-Term Hardening
- Enforce a maintenance program that tracks plugin CVEs and applies updates promptly.
- Monitor webserver and WAF logs for anomalous
admin-ajax.phprequests containing shortcode syntax. - Apply least-privilege configuration to plugins and reduce the number of third-party plugins registering dynamic/privileged shortcodes.
- Subscribe to WordPress vulnerability feeds and re-check CVE-2026-86803 as EPSS scoring and any PoC become available.
