Build dnsdist DoT Frontend with TLS Session Resumption
dnsdist is a highly performant DNS load balancer that can terminate DoT on port 853 and forward plaintext or encrypted traffic to backends. The addTLSLocal directive binds a listening socket with a certificate and key, and the tlsSessionTickets option enables TLS session resumption to cut handshake cost. Internally, dnsdist uses OpenSSL or GnuTLS to accept TLS connections, parses the length-prefixed DNS message, applies rules (rate limiting, caching, routing), and forwards to the selected backend pool.
In production this is the architecture of choice for large-scale DoT deployments: a fleet of dnsdist nodes terminates TLS, applies DDoS mitigation and per-client rate limits, and forwards to internal Unbound or PowerDNS Recursor instances. It is used by ISPs, public resolvers, and enterprise egress gateways that must offer DoT to clients while keeping backend plaintext for performance. Session tickets dramatically reduce CPU on repeat connections from the same client.
Security-wise, enable tlsSessionTickets but rotate keys periodically, and set tlsMinVersion to 1.2 or 1.3. Use addAction with MaxQPSIPRule to blunt amplification attempts over DoT. Performance impact is dominated by handshake CPU: without tickets, thousands of short-lived DoT connections can saturate a core. Common pitfalls are forgetting to reload certificates after renewal (dnsdist does not auto-reload unless configured), and mis-sizing the backend pool so that one slow recursive resolver becomes a bottleneck.
