Building Container Images from S3 Tarball Contexts via Kaniko Executor

TARGET_ENV: Linux (AWS EKS, Self-hosted Kubernetes)
[ TAGS: kaniko, snippet, s3, aws, storage, ci-cd ]

Kaniko supports pulling build contexts directly from AWS S3 buckets using the s3:// protocol scheme. During execution, Kaniko uses built-in AWS SDK components to download the specified gzipped tarball from the target bucket, uncompresses the archive into its internal root directory, and parses the Dockerfile located inside the unpacked root.

This approach is essential in decoupled CI/CD architectures where source code preparation, such as linting, compiling, and artifact bundling, is separated from image construction. For example, a Lambda function or orchestrator packs source code into S3, and an isolated Kaniko Kubernetes job consumes the bundle to build the container image.

Utilizing S3 context sources removes Git repository credentials from the container build execution context, reducing credential exposure risk. Ensure the Kaniko container has appropriate read permissions on the target S3 bucket through IAM roles or AWS environment variables. A common pitfall is failing to properly archive relative symbolic links inside the build context tarball, which can break Kaniko build steps.
