Capture Ingress Traffic on Specific vSwitch Uplink Using pktcap-uw
The pktcap-uw utility is ESXi native user-world packet capture tool that taps directly into the VMkernel networking stack. Unlike standard tcpdump, pktcap-uw captures packets at distinct stages along the micro-segmentation path, including physical NICs (vmnic), virtual switches, kernel ports (vmk), and virtual machine vNICs. Utilizing the --uplink flag coupled with direction options (--dir 0 for Rx, 1 for Tx) allows engineers to trace frames before or after virtual switch processing logic.
Production use cases include debugging dropping packets across VLAN or VXLAN encapsulation layers, diagnosing asymmetric routing issues on enterprise uplinks, and validating ingress firewall policy execution. When network traffic disappears between the physical switch port and a guest OS, this tool isolates whether the frame was discarded by the ESXi vSwitch or internal packet filter rules.
From a performance standpoint, capturing high-throughput packet streams can induce significant CPU overhead on the ESXi host. Writing heavy PCAP files directly to local boot media or small datastores risks running out of disk space or corrupting flash storage. Always restrict captures using explicit filters like IP, port, or packet counts (--cnt) to prevent memory exhaustion and excessive log volume.
