Capturing Real-Time io_uring Kernel Events via Perf Tracepoints

TARGET_ENV: Linux Kernel 5.4+, linux-tools, Ubuntu 20.04+, RHEL 8+
[ TAGS: io_uring, snippet, perf, tracepoints, observability, linux ]

This command uses the Linux perf utility to attach to static kernel tracepoints dedicated to the io_uring subsystem and aggregate event counts over a 10-second sampling window system-wide. Internally, the Linux kernel includes embedded tracepoints in the io_uring source code (e.g., io_uring_create, io_uring_submit_req, io_uring_complete_req, and io_uring_queue_async_work). When perf stat executes, it enables these tracepoints via tracefs, gathering execution statistics without incurring full instruction-level tracing overhead.

Systems architects and DevSecOps engineers run this diagnostics command during performance regression testing, capacity planning, and architecture verification. It provides precise statistical metrics showing whether I/O workloads are successfully executing inline within submission loops or being offloaded to worker threads due to blocking storage operations.

Static tracepoint sampling is highly efficient and safe for production invocation, introducing negligible performance impact on active workloads. However, analyzing raw event counts requires deep familiarity with io_uring internal mechanisms; high numbers of io_uring_queue_async_work events indicate that operations are falling back to asynchronous worker threads, signaling potential I/O bottlenecks or unoptimized storage flags.

> System.Execute()

perf stat -e "io_uring:io_uring_create,io_uring:io_uring_submit_req,io_uring:io_uring_complete_req,io_uring:io_uring_queue_async_work" -a -- sleep 10
