CTDB Clustered Database Setup for Active-Active NFS State Sync

TARGET_ENV: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, RHEL 9.2
[ TAGS: ctdb, snippet, active-active, glusterfs, nfs, clustering ]

This command initializes CTDB (Clustered TDB), a cluster database manager designed to synchronize status, locking, and public IP addresses across nodes in a cluster sharing a distributed filesystem like GlusterFS or CephFS. CTDB manages public Virtual IPs dynamically and automatically redistributes them when a node fails, while providing a cluster-wide lock manager to ensure file locking state is unified across all active cluster members.

High-throughput media rendering farms, web hosting clusters, and large-scale analytics platforms use CTDB with NFS or Samba to achieve active-active file access. Instead of traditional active-passive standby pairs, all nodes concurrently serve NFS traffic and process I/O operations simultaneously over the shared distributed storage backend.

Active-active file locking introduces significant network inter-node communication overhead; low latency (<1ms) on the cluster private interconnect is crucial to prevent filesystem lock starvation and degraded read or write performance. Split-brain conditions in CTDB can lead to conflicting file state locks and localized IP conflicts; explicit split-brain protection and strict quorum voting must be enforced in the CTDB configuration file.
