Dynamic TLS Certificate Upload and SNI Association via Unix Socket
This command uses Nginx Unit's RESTful control API over a local Unix domain socket to dynamically upload and register a bundled TLS certificate and private key. Unit's master process receives the payload, parses the OpenSSL-compatible PEM chain, validates private key keypair matching, and stores the cryptographic material in host memory under the specified certificate store key. The entire transaction occurs asynchronously without interrupting active network connections or dropping socket bindings.
In production environments, this mechanism is ideal for automated Zero-Downtime Public Key Infrastructure PKI certificate rotations. Systems integrated with Let's Encrypt or HashiCorp Vault can trigger an automated post-renewal hook script that issues a single HTTP PUT command to register updated certificates across fleet nodes instantly, associating them with Server Name Indication SNI listeners.
From a DevSecOps standpoint, direct access to the Unix socket must be restricted using strict file system permissions to prevent local privilege escalation or unauthorized TLS key manipulation. The dynamic certificate loading mechanism incurs zero latency degradation for current TLS handshakes, though uploading malformed or mismatched certificate chains will return an explicit HTTP 400 error and prevent invalid state application.
