High-Throughput PHP Runtime Configuration with Native Direct Execution

TARGET_ENV: Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, RHEL 9
[ TAGS: nginx, snippet, nginx-unit, php, laravel, performance, app-server ]

This configuration replaces traditional PHP-FPM setups by executing PHP scripts directly inside managed Nginx Unit worker processes. Unit integrates with the PHP SAPI interface, allowing dynamic setting of custom php.ini execution directives per application definition without altering global host configuration files.

This architecture is designed for high-concurrency PHP framework deployments such as Laravel or Symfony. By eliminating the FastCGI network or domain socket proxy overhead present in classical Nginx-to-PHP-FPM architectures, request latency is significantly reduced.

Direct thread execution delivers up to 30 percent higher throughput and lower memory footprint per concurrent request. However, memory leaks within custom legacy PHP code will accumulate in worker processes, requiring the enforcement of strict request limit thresholds to trigger graceful process recycling.
