Monitoring io_uring Exploitation Vectors via Auditd Rules

TARGET_ENV: Linux Kernel 5.4+, RHEL 8+, Ubuntu 20.04+, Debian 11+
[ TAGS: linux, snippet, io_uring, auditd, siem, compliance, security ]

This configuration appends rules to the Linux Audit Daemon (auditd) framework to monitor and log all executions of the io_uring system call family across 64-bit architectures. Internally, the Linux kernel audit subsystem hooks into the system call dispatch table. Whenever a process issues io_uring_setup, io_uring_register, or io_uring_enter, the audit framework evaluates the entry and exit conditions, capturing details such as process ID, effective user ID, process name, and system call arguments before appending the structured audit record to /var/log/audit/audit.log.

Security Operations Center (SOC) teams and DevSecOps engineers deploy these audit rules in highly regulated environments requiring strict compliance with PCI-DSS, SOC 2, or NIST guidelines. Monitoring these system calls allows security analysts to detect unauthorized binary execution, privilege escalation attempts, or unauthorized high-performance exfiltration tools attempting to bypass standard file access monitoring tools.

High-frequency invocation of io_uring_enter by high-throughput applications can generate immense log volumes, leading to disk exhaustion and high CPU overhead within the auditd daemon. To prevent performance degradation on high-performance storage nodes, security teams should combine these audit rules with filters restricting logging to unprivileged user IDs or specific untrusted user namespaces, while excluding trusted applications.
