Optimizing Btrfs RAID Mounts with Async Discard, ZSTD, and Space Cache v2

TARGET_ENV: Linux Kernel 6.2+, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, Debian 12, Fedora 39
[ TAGS: btrfs, snippet, mount-options, zstd, nvme, performance ]

Mounting a Btrfs RAID pool with specific performance flags alters how the kernel manages storage allocation and flash trim operations. The space_cache=v2 option forces Btrfs to use a persistent free space tree stored as a B-tree, eliminating memory and performance bottlenecks encountered on large multi-terabyte arrays under v1. The discard=async parameter offloads TRIM commands to a background workqueue, preventing NVMe and SSD latency spikes during bulk deletions.

These mount parameters are essential for high-density flash storage nodes, container registries, and virtual machine hosts where sustained write performance and garbage collection are required. Enforcing ZSTD compression with compress-force=zstd:1 reduces physical write amplification and extends flash memory lifespans.

Forcing compression consumes additional CPU cycles, though modern CPU hardware handles ZSTD level 1 with negligible overhead. Ensure that all systems accessing shared Btrfs volumes run modern Linux kernels supporting space cache v2 to prevent filesystem mount failures or legacy cache fallbacks.

> System.Execute()

mount -o noatime,compress-force=zstd:1,space_cache=v2,discard=async,autodefrag /dev/sdb /mnt/btrfs_pool
