Prometheus Remote Write Integration for Real-Time k6 Telemetry
The k6 Prometheus remote write output extension streams execution metrics directly to a Prometheus-compatible time series database endpoint during test execution. By leveraging the Prometheus Remote Write standard protocol, k6 serializes protocol buffers and transmits compressed HTTP POST requests containing metrics such as HTTP request duration, total requests, and active virtual user counts.
Production teams utilize this integration to observe load test impact in real time on central Grafana dashboards alongside application logs and infrastructure metrics. This enables immediate correlation between synthetic traffic spikes and backend resource bottlenecks, database lock contention, or memory leaks.
Exposing remote write endpoints introduces security risks if unauthenticated; TLS encryption and basic authentication or Bearer tokens must be enforced. Additionally, generating high-frequency metrics across thousands of virtual users can consume significant bandwidth and cause metric ingestion throttling on the monitoring cluster.
