Rate-Limiting and Throttling Abusive Clients with dnsdist in Front of PowerDNS
dnsdist is a highly-scalable DNS load balancer that sits in front of PowerDNS Authoritative and enforces per-source rate limits, response-size limits, and query-type ACLs. Internally, dnsdist maintains a shared-memory cache of token buckets keyed by client subnet, and for each incoming packet it evaluates the configured rules before forwarding to the PowerDNS backend pool. The dynBlockRules feature can temporarily block a source for a configurable duration once its query rate exceeds a threshold, which is the standard mitigation for DNS amplification and NXDOMAIN floods.
In production, dnsdist is deployed on the same host as PowerDNS or on a dedicated edge node, and it is the recommended way to absorb volumetric attacks without touching the authoritative daemon. It also enables consistent hashing of queries to backends for cache locality, health checks, and TLS termination for DoT and DoH. Large operators use it to enforce per-customer query quotas and to drop malformed packets before they reach the auth server.
Security implications: rate limiting must be tuned carefully, because an overly aggressive rule can block legitimate recursive resolvers that share a source IP with abusive traffic. Always exclude your own resolvers and monitoring hosts via addACL or addLocal. Performance-wise, dnsdist adds microseconds per packet and scales linearly across threads, but the dynBlock table is shared and can become a contention point at extreme rates. Common pitfalls include not setting setMaxUDPPacketSize, forgetting to enable reuseport, and applying rate limits to TCP queries, which are usually legitimate.
