Selective Architecture Extraction from Multi-Platform Images

TARGET_ENV: Debian 12, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, Arch Linux
[ TAGS: skopeo, snippet, multi-arch, arm64, extraction, optimization ]

This command targets a multi-architecture manifest list on a remote registry and extracts only the specified target architecture and operating system combination into a local raw directory format. Internally, Skopeo parses the parent manifest index, locates the manifest digest matching the requested OS and architecture parameters, and downloads only the layer blobs associated with that specific platform target.

This functionality is invaluable for resource-constrained deployments, embedded IoT edge provisioning, and multi-architecture build optimization. Deployer nodes targeting single-board ARM computers can download strictly necessary ARM64 binaries without wasting bandwidth or disk space on unused AMD64 or x86 layers.

Bandwidth usage and network transit times are drastically minimized when processing multi-gigabyte multi-arch manifests. Security risk is bounded by validating the target manifest digest against the index. A common issue arises when target registries contain incomplete manifest indices, causing Skopeo to fail if the overridden platform combination does not explicitly exist upstream.

> System.Execute()

skopeo copy --override-arch arm64 --override-os linux docker://docker.io/library/ubuntu:22.04 dir:/tmp/ubuntu-arm64
