Upstream Load Balancing with Dynamic Backend Node Manipulation

TARGET_ENV: Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, RHEL 9
[ TAGS: nginx, snippet, nginx-unit, load-balancing, devops, blue-green, upstreams ]

This command configures an in-memory upstream load-balancing pool in Nginx Unit, utilizing weighted round-robin distribution across multiple backend service nodes. Unit maintains persistent TCP connection pools to backend endpoints, dynamically evaluating target health status and updating connection routing tables instantly upon API call completion without dropping active HTTP sessions.

This strategy is critical in modern Cloud-Native CI/CD pipelines during blue-green deployments, dynamic canary releases, or auto-scaling events where backend server IP addresses change frequently. CI/CD runners can programmatically scale backend node weights up or down via REST commands.

Dynamic upstream updates bypass expensive web server reloads, preventing connection blips or ephemeral socket exhaustion. However, administrators must ensure backend service health checks are active on targets, as directing traffic to unresponsive backends will cause HTTP 502 Bad Gateway responses.
