CVE-2026-81469
Executive Summary
CVE-2026-81469 is an unquoted search path (path interception) vulnerability, CWE-428, in Dell Inventory Collector Client versions prior to 15.0.0. A low-privileged attacker with local access to an affected Windows endpoint could place a malicious executable in a directory that is searched by the vulnerable service or scheduled task before the legitimate binary, resulting in arbitrary code execution in the context of the affected process and elevation of privileges. The vulnerability carries a CVSS base score of 7.8 (High) and, as of this report, has no publicly released proof-of-concept, no exploit code in the wild, no CISA KEV listing, and no confirmed vendor patch artifact from tracked sources — patch confidence is 0/4.
This record — and 170,000+ others — are available via the ValtersIT API. One endpoint replaces five: NVD + GitHub CVE + CISA KEV + EPSS + Nuclei + Exploit-DB, unified.

Technical Analysis
The root cause is CWE-428, "Unquoted Search Path or Element." This weakness class occurs when a Windows service, scheduled task, or privileged process registers an executable path that contains a space and is not enclosed in quotation marks. When Windows resolves such a path, the CreateProcess-family path parsing logic attempts candidate executables in a predictable order (for example, C:\Program.exe before C:\Program Files\Vendor\App.exe). If an attacker can write to any of those earlier-resolved locations, the operating system will execute the attacker's binary instead of the intended one.
The Dell Inventory Collector Client is a Dell endpoint agent component that inventories hardware and software assets, typically operating with elevated privileges on managed business endpoints. Because it runs in a privileged context, any successful path interception yields code execution at that same privilege level — the attacker does not need to already hold administrative rights. The CVSS vector AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H confirms the profile: local attack vector, low attack complexity, low privileges required, no user interaction, scope unchanged, and high impact across confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
Two attack-surface variants are characteristic of this weakness class, and the available data does not disambiguate which applies to this product:
- Service binary path interception — the service's registered
ImagePathcontains an unquoted path with whitespace, allowing a low-privileged user to drop a binary into an earlier-resolved directory. - Unquoted element within a command — a privileged process invokes another executable or script via an unquoted path or search-path-dependent lookup, allowing DLL or executable hijacking from a user-writable directory.
No function names, API calls, registry keys, service names, file paths, or command-line parameters are supplied in the NVD description or CNA title for this CVE. Consistent with the accuracy rules governing this report, no such specifics are asserted below. What can be stated with confidence is the vulnerability class, the required privilege level, and the local nature of the exploit.
Exploitation requires only that the attacker already possess a foothold as a low-privileged local user. On shared or multi-user enterprise endpoints (for example, VDI images, jump hosts, or kiosk systems), a single unprivileged account is sufficient to seed the malicious binary. Because the weakness is deterministic path parsing rather than a memory-safety flaw, exploitation does not require fuzzing, specific timing, or crafted network input, which aligns with the AC:L (Low) complexity rating.
Exploitation Scenarios
1) Reconnaissance / target identification. The attacker obtains an initial low-privileged foothold on a Dell-managed Windows endpoint — through phishing, a weak service account, or an existing multi-user session. The attacker enumerates installed Dell endpoint agents, running services, and scheduled tasks to identify which privileged component is vulnerable to unquoted path resolution. This is local enumeration only; no remote scanning is required.
2) Triggering the flaw class. Because the affected component resolves an executable path (or path element) that is unquoted and contains whitespace, Windows will search intermediate directories before reaching the intended binary. The attacker identifies a directory earlier in that search order to which the low-privileged account has write permission. In the classic CWE-428 pattern, planting a binary with the truncated/intermediate filename causes the operating system to execute it ahead of the legitimate executable.
3) Payload / execution. The attacker writes a malicious executable to the writable intercept location. The payload is executed when the vulnerable privileged process next starts — on service restart, scheduled task execution, system reboot, or a triggering event. Because the interception occurs during the privileged process's own startup, the payload inherits that process's elevated token. No user interaction is required (UI:N).
4) Post-exploitation impact. Successful interception yields code execution in a privileged security context on the local host, satisfying the Elevation of Privileges objective. From there the attacker can persist via the same hijackable path or additional service/task modifications, disable endpoint controls, harvest local credentials, and pivot laterally using the host's domain context. The high C/I/A subscores reflect the attacker's ability to read sensitive inventory and credential material, alter system configuration, and disrupt the agent or host availability.
No public proof-of-concept, exploit code, or Nuclei template exists for this CVE at the time of writing. The attack chain above is inferred from the CWE-428 vulnerability class and the CVSS vector; no product-specific implementation details are asserted.
Impact Assessment
- Attack Vector (AV:L): Local — the attacker must already have code execution or an interactive session on the target host. This does not permit remote, unauthenticated exploitation.
- Attack Complexity (AC:L): Low — path interception is deterministic and does not depend on race conditions or environment-specific timing.
- Privileges Required (PR:L): Low — an ordinary, non-administrative user account is sufficient.
- User Interaction (UI:N): None — the payload executes as a side effect of the privileged component's normal operation.
- Scope (S:U): Unchanged — the vulnerable component's authority is the ceiling for the impact.
- Confidentiality / Integrity / Availability (C:H/I:H/A:H): All three are rated High.
Business impact. Dell Inventory Collector Client is deployed at scale across managed enterprise fleets for asset inventory. On any affected endpoint where an attacker holds a low-privileged account, this vulnerability converts that foothold into privileged code execution. In environments with shared endpoints, VDI pools, or thin-client infrastructure, the blast radius scales with the number of concurrent users per host. Because the component operates in a privileged context, a successful exploit can undermine endpoint management and inventory integrity, allowing the attacker's tampering to go unreported by the very agent responsible for asset visibility. The combination of high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact with low required privileges places this squarely in the "privilege escalation" tier that adversaries pursue immediately after initial access — it is a standard step in the progression from user-level compromise to host and domain control.
There is no evidence of exploit-in-the-wild activity, no CISA KEV listing, and no EPSS score has been published by FIRST.org. Absence of exploitation evidence should not be read as absence of risk: path-interception vulnerabilities are trivially automatable, are well understood by commodity and red-team tooling, and become exploitable the moment a suitable PoC is published.

Mitigation & Patch Guidance
Patch confidence: 0/4 (UNPATCHED — no patch evidence from any tracked source).
1) Immediate mitigations (compensating controls until a vendor fix is verified):
- Remove write permissions from non-administrative users on root drive directories and on any intermediate directories that precede the Dell Inventory Collector installation path in Windows' search order. Directory ACL hardening is the single most effective control against CWE-428.
- Where operationally feasible, temporarily stop or disable the Dell Inventory Collector Client service/task on high-value endpoints until the affected component is upgraded, accepting the loss of inventory coverage.
- Restrict local logon on shared endpoints, VDI pools, and kiosks to reduce the number of accounts that could stage a hijack binary.
- Deploy the detection content in the preceding section to alert on executable creation in path-interception locations.
2) Patch / upgrade steps:
- The vulnerability is stated to affect Dell Inventory Collector Client versions prior to 15.0.0. Upgrade to 15.0.0 or later.
- No vendor advisory URL, KB article, hotfix identifier, or download reference was provided in the available intelligence. Before upgrading, obtain the current installer and release notes directly from Dell's official support portal and independently verify the fixed version string — do not rely on unverified third-party mirrors.
- Validate the upgrade post-deployment by re-enumerating the installed version and confirming the fixed build is present on all managed endpoints.
- Because patch confidence is 0/4, treat the fix as unverified until a vendor advisory is published and the corrected version is confirmed on-host.
3) Long-term hardening:
- Maintain an enterprise baseline that flags unquoted service paths and scheduled-task paths across the fleet, and remediate them systematically rather than per-CVE.
- Enforce least privilege so that standard users cannot write to any directory in a privileged process's search path.
- Apply application allowlisting / WDAC so that unauthorized binaries cannot execute from path-interception locations regardless of path resolution.
- Monitor for privilege-escalation attempts via T1574.009 and correlate file-creation events with subsequent privileged process starts.
