What it actually is

The built-in LED grow light runs on an 8-hour timer (on from when you plug it in, off after 8h, repeat). For a windowless server room or a north-facing desk, this makes growing herbs possible where it was not before.

There is nothing to calibrate, no app required, no Bluetooth pairing, no cloud account. It is the rare piece of hardware that works exactly as advertised.
The pods ship with nutrients already mixed into the growth medium. You will see germination in 3–10 days depending on the plant. Basil and chili come up fast. Tomatoes take longer but produce more dramatically.
What grows well on a developer’s desk

The only pod type I would skip for a desk environment: anything that grows very tall (peppers, some tomatoes) unless you have the 9 Pro with the adjustable arm.
The biophilic effect is real

Honest downsides

LED color. The grow light is full-spectrum but leans pink-white. On a desk in a dark room at night, it is visible. Not blinding, but present. I run mine on a smart plug on a schedule that turns off at 22:00.
Water level indicator. It is a float inside the reservoir, visible through a small window. Low-tech and reliable, but not connected to anything. You fill the tank when you see it drop, not when your phone tells you.
Algae in the reservoir after many months. Flush and clean every 3–4 refill cycles. 10 minutes of work.
